Oberto Oberti, B. Arch., M. Arch., MRAIC, MAIBC, AAA, NCARB is President of Oberto Oberti Architecture & Urban Design Inc. He has spent over thirty-five years in planning, design, construction and development management, including work in some of the most prominent projects in Western Canada.

Born on the Lake of Como, near Milan, Italy, from a family of engineers and artists, he received an education in classical studies, fine arts and civil engineering in Italy. He also studied in Switzerland and in England. Following emigration to Canada in 1965, he attained both a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Master of Architecture (Urban Design and Planning) degree from the University of British Columbia. Before coming to Canada Mr. Oberti was involved in ski racing as a member of Ski Club Pirovano of Passo Stelvio and of Ski Club Courmayeur. He has participated in many sports and is still an avid skier. He has travelled extensively in North America, Asia and in Europe, and his clientele spans the three Continents.

Mr. Oberti has been in charge of the design of major projects since the early 1970s, when he was the head of the Architectural Division of the Dunhill Development Corporation Ltd. He was responsible for projects including the new town plan for the Town of Colwood, west of Victoria BC, and the negotiations with the Capital Regional District leading to the approval of the redevelopment of the Songhees Peninsula, in Victoria. These projects involved infrastructure of over two hundred million dollars and are now achieving an overall investment level that is surpassing the original development plans.

Mr. Oberti opened his own practice in 1976, and has been providing design and development management services ever since. In his office, projects for a value of several hundreds of millions of dollars have been designed and developed, ranging from industrial plants to high-rise apartment buildings to new resorts. Mr. Oberti’s development and construction experience has allowed him to prepare a number of new and innovative proposals for tourism and infrastructure projects.

His design philosophy is that of enhancing the message of the client as well as the enjoyment of a quality lifestyle, provided by carefully planned and conceived award winning designs. Projects of all sizes, from the design of interiors to large-scale plans, are accomplished in a team environment with other consultants and with a commitment to create innovative and economically successful projects. His architectural practice aims to achieve a timeless artistic quality together with design innovation and market acceptance.

In addition to excellence in design, Mr. Oberti strives to provide economically viable design services and cost-effective processes by which projects are completed. He has been at the forefront of innovative techniques of project management and of municipal and provincial approval processes.

Mr. Oberti has delivered many speeches and published lectures. He has delivered lectures to the University of Waterloo, Ontario, the Conference Internationale du Batiment '84, the Politecnico University of Milan, Italy, and to many other Universities, Colleges, Associations and Service Clubs. He taught the Building Code of the City of Vancouver for the Certified Professional Program at the University of British Columbia Continuing Education Program for ten years, starting in 1983. Numerous articles on Mr. Oberti and his work have been published for many years in several newspapers and magazines, in Canada and overseas. His paper on project management was published for the international conference on Contract Management in the Construction Industry held in Singapore in November 1999.

In the course of his work Mr. Oberti has had occasion to meet key players in business and in government. He and his office have cooperated with a large network of consultants, nationally and internationally. In the United States, he has been associated with EQE Engineering of San Francisco, with William L. Pereira Associates and with the McMahon Partnership in Los Angeles. In Japan he has been associated with the office of Raymond Tanabe Design of Tokyo, in France with Diener Guirard Architecture of Paris, and in Italy he is associated with Gruppo Soges of Milan.

In addition to being a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, the Vancouver Board of Trade, the Terminal City Club, and having served the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, the West Vancouver Rotary Club, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, and of having chaired the Housing Committee and the Urban Design Panel Committee of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, Mr. Oberti has been a member of the Development Committee of UBC Realty Inc. (the former University of British Columbia Real Estate Corporation), a Director of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, a Council member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, and a member of several committees of the Vancouver Board of Trade. Mr. Oberti is also a Director of the Vancouver Foundation of Art, Justice and Liberty and a member of Lambda Alpha International, an honorary land economics society.

Mr. Oberti has provided leadership with innovative concepts and a unique message of elegance and style in all the projects of his company group, but, more importantly, Mr. Oberti has successfully managed the development of a number of large projects and the companies that generated them. Recently, as design and project manager for Ballast Nedam International, which develops and contracts projects worldwide, he developed the successful start of a new ski and summer resort near Glacier and Banff National Parks – Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. This is not only another unique project but also the first project of its kind in Canada in the last twenty-five years. This project, which will include hotels, condominiums, townhouses and single-family dwellings to create a completely new resort, is now in its seventh year of construction according to a unique Master Plan that has gained worldwide acclaim, with articles published across Canada, in the United States and the United Kingdom. On a smaller scale, the Canada House built in Torino for the Winter Olympic Games in 2006, was a design created by the Oberti design team.
