From 1978 to 1983, Mr. Bates was project administrator for Gary Player’s architecture team, coordinating design and supervising construction of golf courses in Hong Kong, the Philippines, South Africa, Rhodesia and the United States. For the next five years he was Vice President of Design and Construction Services for Jack Nicklaus Golf Services in North Palm Beach, Florida.
He was responsible for client relations, as well as supervision and administration of all design and construction projects, with budgets ranging from $2 million to $6 million, located in the United States, England, Austria, Japan, Switzerland and the Caribbean. Mr. Bates struck out on his own in 1988 to form The Bates Golf Design Group. In 1991, he joined forces with the highly-popular Master Champion Fred Couples.
